Douglas M. Johnson on Roving City Council Meetings

It’s an issue many cities struggle with, said Doug Johnson, a fellow at the Rose Institute for State and Local Government at Claremont McKenna College.
“If some parts of town feel ignored, it’s a very high profile, symbolic way of showing that you’re paying attention,” Johnson said. “The idea comes up a lot, but it almost never happens.”
Most city halls are specifically arranged to tape council meetings, and figuring out how to get enough cameras – at minimal expense – to another location is one of many challenges, Johnson said.
The survey contains a vast amount of data about fees, taxes, costs, and incentives that affect business in more than 400 communities nationwide. Updated annually, it is a valuable resource for cities, businesses, and developers.
