Independent Redistricting Commission Bill Fails in Texas
A bill that would have put Congressional redistricting in Texas in the hands of an independent commission rather than the legislature failed in the Texas Senate recently, according to the Austin American-Statesman. While the bill would have only affected Congressional districts and not Texas Senate and House districts, the bill did not make it to a vote do to a split among Republicans on the bill. State Senator Jeff Wentworth, a Republican of San Antonio had this to say about about the need for an independent commission:
“Human nature is too strong to be fair … We can’t be fair,” Wentworth said, noting the 2003 debacle in which Senate and House Democrats left the state to avoid having a GOP plan forced upon them.
